Force and Motion,
The Force & Motion Institute is a 2-week program for 6th-8th grade science or mathematics teachers that addresses the TAKS related to physics concepts in these disciplines. Each week's curriculum is built around a different theme and integrates the use of toys, technology, and traditional equipment.
The Galveston Bay Project
The Galveston Bay Project for teachers is a yearlong program that features a 3-week summer session for K-8 teachers. Learn more about the Galveston Bay watershed and how this theme can be used to teach science and mathematics objectives described in the TAKS, while integrating technology in the classroom and in the field at all levels of instruction. Graduate credit and Professional Continuing Education credit.Micro to Macro
From Micro to Macro is a 2-week program for 6th-8th grade science or mathematics teachers that focuses on using project-based explorations to teach data collection/ analysis and problem solving strategies. The curriculum will move from the microscopic world of genetics to the expanse of the universe. The summer institute will be two weeks, plus monthly academic year follow-up meetings.Teacher Institute for the Advancement of Space Science Education
Teacher Institute for the Advancement of Space Science Education is our newest offering and is a collaborative effort between Rice and the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. This project introduces high school teachers to the exciting world of current space biomedical research. This year-long program includes an intensive, 2-week summer session and four follow-up sessions during the academic year split between sites at Rice University and UTMB. Professional Continuing Education credit.The Science Mathematics Institute
The Science and Mathematics Institute is a year-long program that features a 3-week program for K-6 teachers to connect measurement, estimation, and problem-solving to mathematics, science, using laboratory materials, as well as playground and sports equipment-guaranteed to increase student motivation. Institute dates are plus academic year follow-up and support. Graduate credit and Professional Continuing Education credit.Elementary Physics and Chemistry
Elementary Physics and Chemistry is a 1-week program for teachers of grades one through six that provides an introduction to physics and chemistry concepts as described in the TAKS, using geology as an organizing theme. Rice's only short-term summer offering, the program was developed for HISD's HU-LINC Elementary Lead Teachers, but is now open to all teachers in the Houston area.
