The Evolution of the San Jacinto River

• The following sites are a series of aerial photos that depict fifty years of evolution of the San Jacinto River.
  • San Jacinto River in 1944
    This is an aerial photo of the Lower San Jacinto River in 1944. You will notice there is no residential or industrial development at this time.

    This aerial photo shows the beginning of industrial development with the addition of pipelines. You will also notice a lake is beginning to form due to sand mining.

    This photo of the Lower San Jacinto River in 1965 shows the beginning of residential development. A large lake has formed where sand mining occurred and the wetlands are diminishing.

    This photo shows an increase of industrial development and an increase of sand dredging. The barges were left abandoned after the sand mining. During the flood of 1994, these barges were swept out and destroyed homes and parts of the I-10 bridge.

  This attractive, icon oriented, easy to use site has information about wetlands. It is kid friendly and has good readable information. There are a number of suggestions for students to help save the endangered wetlands.
